TdF #6: Gorilla Power

July 5, 2013

The peleton was a nervous bunch of riders today and the pace was very high. There was a lot of talk about the wind splitting them up but it didn’t really happen and there was not much trouble. Cav crashed only 30km from the end which may have affected his finish. Brajkovic went down later and much harder. Any thought of a high GC finish for him has gone now.

It was Greipel’s turn for an ideal lead out. His team delivered him perfectly on a flat wide road. Perfect for his power to take a fast winning finish. Kittel was in the mix with his team working hard. That was only good enough for third. Sagan was going for points rather than the win. Cav had too much to do and gave up in the last 50m when the win was unlikely.

Orica Green Edge keep stay in yellow but now with Impey, the first African to lead the race. Most of the favourites were at the front most of the day, but Quintana crashed. Van den Broeck was the most prominent of several who abandoned.
