TdF #5: Regression to the norm

July 5, 2013

Cav completed a superb lead out for yet another TdF stage win. We had to wait until the fifth stage for the world’s best sprinter to win again, but he made it look so easy. No one looked like winning once Cavendish came around Steegmans. Greipel lost his lead out man’s wheel and started too far back. Sagan showed impressive speed at the end showing he can compete even in these mass bunch sprints.

There was a huge crash behind the sprinters, probably due to lead out man being hit by someone coming up at speed. I’m surprised that doesn’t happen more often as there can be a significant speed difference and those going backwards often go through the middle of the faster bunch. Seems as though everyone finished but there will be sore bodies tomorrow. There was also a bad crash a few km earlier where a few went down hard.

The stage was long and a bit lumpy. There was the usual small which was chased down quite early. From there it always looked like a big bunch sprint and when that happens, Cav often wins.
