TdF Stage 14: Limoux – Foix

July 28, 2012

The news of the day was the bizarre incident caused by some malicious idiot who threw tacks on the road at the top of the last climb. The sport is hard and dangerous enough with this spiteful moron. The unfortunate Kiserlovski crashed on the descent and broke his collar bone. Evans was particularly hampered. He was left without team mates at the top of the climb with the first puncture. The next team mate to appear also punctured. Team cars are often left several minutes behind in the chaos of a long hard climb. So Evans had to wait for ages before he had two wheels to get going again. Even when he did, he had another two or three stops in the next few km to change wheels or bikes. Many others also punctured.

Although the peleton did not know exactly what had happened, they sat up and waited. Sky in particular was very reluctant to let anyone chase or attack. Cycling ethics can be confusing and are certainly complex, but this was a great example of honour.

The rest of the stage comprised several hard climbs. A break succeeded with the popular Luis Leon Sanchez winning. Sagan was in the break and showed his talents by keeping pace over the big mountain passes. In doing so, he has surely won the green jersey – he leads it by miles.
