TdF Stage 10 Mâcon – Bellegarde-sur-Valserine

July 28, 2012

The hard nature of cycle racing in the mountains was seen today with the slow motion finish of exhausted riders. The remnants of the break attacked each other until they could hardly climb the steady ramp to the finish line. Voeckler won with fantastic grit and determination. Scarponi, Voigt and Sanchez will be disappointed that they missed out. Voeckler also gained the mountains jersey, two big prizes to turn around a race that has been disappointing, especially compared to the heady heights of last year.

It was a hard stage with several huge mountain passes to cross. There were many attacks from the peleton especially at the start. The race never really settled down.

Sky controlled the peleton once the climbing really got going and kept a steady tempo going all day. They only real threat came when Nibali gained a minute at one point after descending faster. The Sky Team was calm and gradually brought him back. Van den Broeck recovered a few seconds as he stayed clear, he still looks too far back to really threaten the Sky machine. Scarponi showed face at last going for a stage win. He climbed hard but was unable to finish strongly enough.
