TdF Stage 7 Tomblaine La Planche des Belles Filles

July 11, 2012

A day for Sky to remember. What a superb team display. They controlled the race all day and put the pressure on when it mattered. Froome finished off the stage the style, sprinting past Evans on the steepest part of the difficult climb at the finish. Wiggins was able to hold Evans wheel and celebrated as Froome crossed the line. Wiggins took the lead in the GC as Cancellara could not hold onto the better climbers.

All the team were seen working for the stage including world champion Cavendish loading up with bottles. Boassen-Hagen, Rogers, Porte and Froome all put in long pulls at the front of the peleton on the relatively short but brutal final climb. They destroyed the field and there only half a dozen left at the desperately steep final section. Evans tried to jump clear but Froome and Wiggins were expecting it and were able to match him. Evans was isolated a long way out but was strong enough to finish without his team mates.

Only 10 riders finished within a minute of Froome with many losing a lot more time. Van Den Broeck was unlucky with a mechanical and lost almost 2 minutes. Sky has put down a clear marker to the field. Klöden, Leipheimer and Basso were well off the pace. The other contenders will have to try much harder to match Sky, let alone beat them.
