TdF Stage 6 Épernay Metz

July 11, 2012

The finish was all about Sagan winning again. He was the incredible hulk today, another funny celebration that will annoy the purists but entertain everyone else. He sprinted past Greipel and Goss on a flat finish, showing that he has plenty of speed and not just power for his previous uphill wins. Greipel was injured, apparently with a dislocated shoulder. How anyone can ride a bike let alone sprint at that speed with a damaged shoulder is beyond me. Goss must be disappointed, his team worked hard, he had a great lead out but still could not deliver.

The big news of the stage was the crashes though; especially a huge crash that occurred about 25km from the finish. Only about 60 avoided the crash including Evans, Wiggins and Cancellara. Most of the RNT team went down, who knows how Cancellara avoided it. Schleck was left without a bike and looking like without a chance of winning the tour. This crash seriously delayed many of the favourites including Brajkovic, Rolland, Scarponi and Valverde – and severely dented any of their chances of winning this year. Cav was also stopped by the crash and missed a shot at the finish. His hopes of retaining the green jersey look gone.

Garmin had a nightmare at the crash. Most of the team was caught up in it with Hejesdal looking badly injured. He finished the stage but a long way down. Farrar is also injured and has hardly been seen sprinting let alone winning a stage. They are a much weakened team and have a very different grand tour from their earlier delight at the giro.

The run of flat stages is over. Stage 7 brings the first of the hills and is likely to shake up the GC.
