TdF Stage 3 Orchies Boulogne sur Mer

July 4, 2012

Sagan amazes the cycling world more and more every race. Another superb finish and an even more entertaining celebration. There is so much to like about the young Slovak. He won by several lengths and takes a commanding lead in the points competition.

The lumpy stage saw another break away for most of the stage. Morkov had another great day at the lead of the race and has secured the climbers jersey until the mountains next week. They were caught on the penultimate climb when the peleton were going at top speed with Basso on the front. The peleton was still a good size at the base of the final climb. The likes of Sagan managed to get over the climbs and be in contention for the win. My pick Chavanel had a good go about 5km out. He attacked on the downhill and managed to force an 11s gap. It wasn’t enough and he was swamped on the final climb.

There were quite a few who were not there. Crashes, hills and mechanicals left more than half the field well behind. The likes of Voeckler, Cobo and Gerrans lost more than 7 minutes. Other notable losers on the day were Vande Velde and Gilbert. Rojas crashed out with what looked like a broken collar bone. Hesjedal was also involved in a crash but managed to finish with the leaders.

Significantly, Siutsou crashed out and leaves the Sky team weaker in the mountains. Both Evans and Wiggins were seen at the front throughout the day. Wiggins was blocked by a crash near the finish but was given the same time as Evans.
