TdF Stage 1 Liege Seraing

July 2, 2012

An excellent finish – another superb win for Sagan, what an incredible season he is having. Cancellara was great as well, easily holding on to the yellow jersey – and saving his RNT team’s season which has been going so badly. Interesting to see Boasson Hagen going for the stage. Sky is obviously not going all out for Wiggins but will allow riders to go for stage wins where they think they have a good chance.

What else could we see from the stage? I like to see who is hanging around at the back or not paying attention. It can show who is not too interested in the gc. Voeckler was at the back a few times but finished with the group of favourites. Sanchez and Valverde were seen at the back as well near the finish, possibly due to crashes. They also got back and did not lose any time.

The only riders on my list that lost time were Albasini, Leipheimer and Cobo. Of those, only Leipheimer might have lost time unintentionally (17s). Albasini was the front at the start of the last climb working for the team, so we can take from that he is not focussing on gc. Cobo was well back so we shouldn’t expect him in the top 10 either.

Evans and Wiggins looked strong near the front half way up the climb. A truce of sorts was called near the end and a decent sized group crossed the line together. We will need to wait until Stage 7 before there is a decent shake up amongst this bunch. They will all need to keep out of trouble, crashes and cross winds can easily rob a good rider of a minute or two on a flat stage.

We will be back to sprinters and breaks for a few days. Today’s break was typical, minor teams fighting out the small climbs to win a jersey for a few days. Morkov will get plenty of camera time for Saxo, another team that needs to turn around their season. So can Cav win tomorrow? He showed plenty of interest in the intermediate sprint, so he is after the points jersey. He will have good competition as there are a lot of good sprinters there. Bring it on.
