Seismic assessment of the Terrace Tunnel in Wellington

April 17, 2012

Technical paper submitted for ANZ2012 geomechanics conference in Melbourne.

The Terrace Tunnel forms an essential lifeline for the road infrastructure in Wellington, New Zealand. The safety of the tunnel is being upgraded by the Wellington Tunnels Alliance. The stability of the tunnel structure under strong earthquake shaking has been assessed. The review included numerical modelling of the tunnel using input time histories based on historic earthquake records. The assessment provided the owner with predictions of potential damage during differing severities of earthquakes. This paper summarises the geotechnical conditions and some of the challenges during the assessment of the tunnel stability.
